Sport related concussion (SRC) is a form of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) which occurs because of a direct blow to the head, neck or body which leads to force being subsequently exerted on the brain.
It is estimated that there are at least 100,000 SRCs in Australia each year with this figure likely lower than actual incidences due to community level SRC being undocumented or failing to present to healthcare providers. Due to increasing concern about the consequences of SRC, there is an increasing amount of research into the area. However, there is a significant gap in the current research which examines knowledge, attitues and policies at the community level, especially in rural area. This research aims to address that gap by examining these areas via a survey and interview. It is hoped that this research will help to inform future policy and education in the area.

The aim of this research is to understand the attitudes, knowledge and practices around sport related concussion in the rural community sporting context. This is important to help identify areas to improve current practices as well as inform future policy and education.
We are seeking participants aged 18 years and older who are involved in rural community sport as either a player, trainer or coach.
Participants are invited to take part in an online, anonymous survey which takes approximately 10-15 minutes to complete. The survey involves a series of questions around knowledge, attitudes, practices and policies pertaining to sport related concussion. There is also the option to complete a semi-structured interview in addition to the survey. The interview takes approximately 30-45 minutes and all transcripts are de-identified before analysis. Complete the survey here:
