Associate Professor Annabel Martin

Dr Annabel Martin is a regional nephrologist based in Albury Wodonga. She completed her FRACP Nephrology in 2013 and has since become firmly embedded in regional Nephrology, General Medicine and Obstetric Medicine with a passion for regional training and workforce. Her roles include Director of Physician Education (DPE), Head of Albury Campus of Charles Sturt Rural Clinical School, Senior Lecturer UNSW and Nephrologist and Obstetric Medicine Physician. In addition to her clinical work at Albury Wodonga Health (AWH), Annabel provides outpatient nephrology and obstetric medicine care to local resettled refugees and indigenous patients. Annabel has developed and implemented renal advanced trainee education events, including Nephrology 101 in 2013 & 2014 and the Regional Nephrology weekend in 2018. Her passion for regional training and workforce led to involvement on ANZSN council in 2020 and ongoing roles on RACP committees. As DPE, Annabel has had a significant impact on the AWH training program with Level 2 accreditation for basic physician training and development of a 3-year training pathway between regional and metropolitan sites, in addition to further accreditation of advanced training subspecialty opportunities. Annabel is a mother of 4, loves skiing, swimming, and running and is keen to see high quality health care provided to regional Australians.

2019 Regional Nephrology Weekend

- Role: developed and implemented a regional nephrology course aimed at providing renal advanced trainees the opportunity to learn about the training and career experiences of regional nephrologists and management of common regional general medical and renal cases.

2019-2021 Water Well Project Albury

- Role: coordinate training and recruitment of local allied health and medical professionals to participate in regular resettled refugee and asylum seeker health literacy education.

2013-2015 Nephrology 101 course

- Role: developed and implemented course for first year renal trainees aimed at teaching trainees how to manage common clinical scenarios in Nephrology.

- Role: teach anatomy to second year science and first year medical students, relate basic knowledge of anatomy to relevant clinical scenarios and demonstrate on human specimens.

2012-2013 Barriers to home dialysis therapies, Alfred Hospital

- Study aimed at identifying why current dialysis patients choose not to undertake home based dialysis. This may help us determine changes we can make to our approach, education and service to renal patients that could increase and maintain uptake of home dialysis therapy.

2021 Regional Victoria Subspecialty Training and Workforce - the current state of play

- Qualitative study involving phone interviews of 9 regional DPEs and General physicians. The primary outcomes were to (1) understand factors leading to live and work regionally (2) understand potential barriers to regional work and (3) identify speciality training programs and positions currently available at each site.
