Associate Professor Kelly Spuur is an Ahpra registered Diagnostic Radiographer with specialisation in diagnostic and screening mammography. Kelly trained at Westmead and Manly District Hospitals in Sydney before relocating to private practice in regional NSW. Kelly grew her original technical college qualification, completing a Bachelor of Applied Science (Medical Imaging) at Charles Sturt and a PhD in Medical Imaging at the University of Sydney. She commenced teaching at Charles Sturt in 2002 moving into full time academia in 2008. Kelly has held a number of senior leadership and management positions at Charles Sturt including Associate Head of School for the School of Dentistry and Health Sciences, Discipline Lead and Course Coordinator; and at CQUniversity, Head of Program for the medical imaging and medical sonography programs in their inaugural year. Currently Kelly is the Associate Head of School for Medical Radiation Science and Pharmacy and Head of Discipline for Medical Radiation Science.

Kelly was awarded Fellowship of the Australian Society of Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy (ASMIRT) in 2016 and is the current chair of the ASMIRT Breast Imaging Reference Group (BIRG).

Kelly has a broad teaching interest in all modalities across the medical radiation sciences with specialist knowledge in breast imaging. She currently teaches into the undergraduate Bachelor of Medical Radiation Science program and is registered to supervise higher degree research students.

RESEARCH INTERESTS INCLUDE:

  • Mammographic image quality and image evaluation systems
  • Mammography positioning techniques and training
  • Quality assurance in breast imaging
  • Visual grading analysis
  • Cone beam breast computed tomography (CBBCT)
  • Computed tomography (CT)

Current projects focus on the PGMI image evaluation system; benchmarking and evidence-based practice in mammographic image quality analysis; mammography and pacemakers, off centring in diagnostic CT and coned beam breast CT.
