Tarni Nelson is a Lecturer in Medical Radiation Science within the School of Dentistry and Medical Sciences at Charles Sturt University.

Tarni is a trained Diagnostic Radiographer with her areas of clinical expertise including extensive experience in trauma imaging particularly within Computed Tomography and the areas of trauma, stroke, cardiac and paediatric scanning.

Tarni graduated from The University of Newcastle in 2012. Throughout her radiography career, Tarni has worked in various metropolitan trauma and oncology centres in both Australia and the United Kingdom, as well as working for a short period as a sole radiographer in rural New South Wales. Currently, Tarni remains a practicing clinician within NSW Health alongside her role as an academic with Charles Sturt.

She commenced part time work with Charles Sturt University in July 2019 and is based at the Port Macquarie Campus.

Tarni has completed a Bachelor Medical Radiation Science (Diagnostic Radiography), Graduate Diploma in Image Interpretation and is currently undertaking her Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching & Learning in Higher Education.

Tarni incorporates her current clinical role, to bring scenario-based learning to her classroom and is currently involved in teaching:

  • MRS120: Professional Fundamentals
  • MRS204: Cross Sectional Anatomy
  • MRS213: Imaging Pathology

Patient care is of utmost importance to Tarni, therefore her focus is on welcoming students to the world of medical radiation sciences and ensuring that the element of humanity in healthcare remains an overarching concept.

Research interest include:

  • the use of an extracurricular podcast within undergraduate Medical Radiation Science education;
  • environmental sustainability within the Medical Radiation Sciences;
  • artificial intelligence in medical imaging;
  • hybrid learning environments, utilising authentic platforms within cross sectional anatomy
  • medical radiation practitioner attitudes towards obesity and challenges imaging obese patients
