Dr Anna Morrell

BDSc BSc (hons)

Lecturer in Clinical Dentistry
Orange

Dr Anna Morrell is a Lecturer in Clinical Dentistry and Higher Degree by Research (HDR) candidate at Charles Sturt University, based at the Orange campus. She contributes to teaching and academic leadership within the Bachelor of Dental Science program while maintaining active engagement in research and clinical practice.

Anna graduated from Charles Sturt University with a Bachelor of Dental Science and later completed a Bachelor of Science (Honours Class I), receiving an Honours Scholarship in recognition of her academic performance. Her honours research investigated inflammatory responses associated with epidermal barrier dysfunction following chronic ultraviolet radiation exposure using an in vivo murine model.

Alongside her academic role, Anna has extensive clinical experience in both public and private dental practice. She previously worked as a Level 2 Dental Officer with Hunter New England Health and has practiced in private dental clinics in Newcastle and Melbourne. She also previously held clinical teaching roles at The University of Melbourne and The University of Newcastle.

Anna teaches within the clinical dentistry curriculum at Charles Sturt University, supporting the development of undergraduate dental students as they progress from pre-clinical training to independent patient care.

Her teaching focuses on clinical supervision in patient clinics, where she guides students in treatment planning, clinical decision making, and the application of evidence-based dentistry in patient management. She contributes to curriculum delivery, student assessment, viva voce examinations, and the provision of structured feedback to support the development of clinical competence and autonomy.

Her teaching approach emphasises the integration of theoretical knowledge with practical clinical skills, encouraging reflective practice and professional development.

Her teaching interests include clinical dentistry, oral surgery, treatment planning, dental materials, and the development of clinical competence in undergraduate dental education.

Anna is currently undertaking a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) at Charles Sturt University, focusing on the materials science of orthodontic aligner systems.

Her research investigates how post-curing environments influence the optical, chemical, and mechanical properties of 3D-printed resin orthodontic aligners. Through laboratory-based materials testing, the project aims to better understand how manufacturing processes affect the performance, durability, and aesthetic stability of these materials.

This work contributes to the growing field of digital dentistry, with particular emphasis on the clinical translation of new dental materials and technologies. By examining how post-processing conditions impact aligner performance, the research seeks to inform best practices in the production and clinical use of digitally manufactured orthodontic appliances.

Anna’s broader research interests include dental materials science, orthodontic aligner technology, and the translation of laboratory findings into improved clinical outcomes.
