Dr. Joseph Ryan is a highly accomplished Oral Medicine Specialist hailing from Canberra. With extensive experience in both the public and private sectors, Joseph has made a significant impact in the field of dental medicine. Joseph served as a Senior Dentist for ACT Health, where he provided exceptional care to patients at The Canberra Hospital, public clinics, and the Alexander Maconchie Correctional Centre. In addition, he worked alongside his father and brother in private practice, further expanding his expertise in the private sector.

Joseph's impressive educational background is a testament to his commitment to excellence in the field of dental medicine. He graduated from the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Medical Science Degree in 2009 and completed his Bachelor of Dental Science from Charles Sturt University in 2014. Joseph's dedication to advancing his knowledge and skills is evident in his recent completion of a Masters of Pain Medicine from the University of Sydney and a Doctorate in Clinical Dentistry in the specialty field of Oral Medicine from the University of Melbourne in 2021.

Currently, Joseph serves as a Senior Lecturer in Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology at Charles Sturt University, where he is actively involved in teaching and mentoring future dental professionals. In the past, Joseph has also served as an Adjunctive Lecturer in Oral Pathology and Oral Medicine at the University of Melbourne.

Joseph's specific areas of interest and research are focused on oral mucosal disease, orofacial pain, and dental sleep medicine. Joseph is currently completing his research in the management of oral mucositis through photobiomodulation therapy.

Joseph's interest in orofacial pain is also noteworthy. He has conducted extensive research in this field, including studies on pain perception and changes in masseter muscle activity during clenching exercises. His work on the treatment of temporomandibular disorders using stabilizing appliance therapies in a general dental practice setting has also been recognized with the International Association of Dental Research (IADR) Western Region Competition award in 2016.

Joseph is an accomplished dental researcher with an impressive track record in the field of facial pain. He completed a rigorous two-year research honours program in facial pain and graduated with First Class Honours in 2016. During his studies, he conducted ground-breaking research on Pain Perception and Changes in Masseter Muscle Activity During Clenching Exercises With Isotonic and Hypertonic Bolus Injections, which earned him the prestigious International Association of Dental Research (IADR) Western Region Competition award in 2015.

Joseph's dedication to his work and his exceptional research skills were recognized once again when he was awarded the IADR Western Region Competition award in 2016 for his work on the treatment of Temporomandibular Disorders Using Stabilizing Appliance Therapies in a General Dental Practice Setting. This award not only highlights Joseph's exceptional research abilities but also recognizes his commitment to helping patients suffering from this debilitating disorder.

Joseph's contributions to the field of dental research have not gone unnoticed. He was granted funding to present his research findings at the IADR conferences in Seoul, South Korea in June 2016 and San Francisco, USA in March 2017. These conferences provide a platform for researchers to showcase their work and exchange knowledge with peers, and Joseph's attendance at these events is a testament to the importance of his research in the field of dental medicine.

In 2019, Joseph published a systematic review on the Epidemiology of Temporomandibular Disorder in the general population, further cementing his reputation as a leading expert in the field.

Most recently, in 2021, Joseph was awarded the top research prize for his project on the management of oral mucositis using photobiomodulation. This latest achievement underscores Joseph's continued dedication to pushing the boundaries of dental research and improving patient outcomes.
