BSc (Hons) (TCD), PhD (UNSW), GradCertLearn&TeachHigherEd (CSU) Dr Louise Pemberton is the Associate Head of School Learning and Teaching and is a senior lecturer in Biomedical Science. She completed a Bachelor of Science (Microbiology) at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland and a PhD in Neurovirology at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) focussing on the pathogenesis of HIV associated dementia. Louise commenced teaching at Charles Sturt in 2012 moving into full time academia in 2016. She has extensive experience in undergraduate anatomy and physiology teaching and a keen interest in the Scholarship of Learning and Teaching. She was awarded a Charles Sturt Vice Chancellors award in 2015 followed by an Australian Award for University Teaching in 2017 and is a Senior Fellow in the Higher Education Academy (UK). Louise teaches physiology, pathophysiology and pharmacology across several allied health courses. Most of her teaching is in 1st year subjects where she creates an active and engaging learning environment that promotes student engagement and success. Louise's main research interests have been neurological complications of viral infection. In particular, the effect of different HIV strains on the production of the neurotoxin, Quinolinic acid. Other research interests have included the investigation of clinical markers for the diagnosis of HIV associated dementia. Since commencing employment at Charles Sturt Louise has been involved with studies investigating the chronic complications associated with Diabetes.Virology
