Alicia was raised in Wollongong, NSW.  Alicia completed a Bachelor of Nursing at University of Wollongong. After completing the Bachelor of Nursing Alicia worked in forensic mental health in Victoria. While working Alicia completed a Graduate Certificate in Mental Health through Monash University.

Alicia enrolled in a Masters of Midwifery through University of Wollongong and The Wollongong Hospital to complete midwifery training. On completion of midwifery, Alicia worked for some time at the Wollongong Hospital before moving to the Central West working as a Midwife/Nurse at the Orange Hospital for over 1 year.

Alicia decided to move to Central Australia to commence working as a Nurse/Midwife at Alice Springs Hospital, where Alicia quickly developed a passion for Indigenous Health and accepted a secondment to work as a Remote Area Midwife/Nurse in Arnhem Land. After the secondment was completed, Alicia gained a permanent position as a Remote Area Midwife/Nurse in central Australia undertaking further education in Women's Health, Remote Practice and Ultrasound.

In Mid 2014 Alicia moved to Wagga Wagga after gaining full time employment as Nurse/Midwife. In 2015 Alicia started casual teaching at the School of Nursing, Midwifery & Indigenous Health at CSU and progressed into a full-time position in 2016.

Alicia Carey is an early career midwifery researcher and academic in Australia. Alicia is currently enrolled in a PhD at Charles Sturt University which focuses on the perceptions and education of Midwives providing care to gender diverse people in maternity services. She has more than 15 years of experience in the sector as a clinician and researcher.
Alicia is currently a member of the Schwartz Rounds steering and planning committee for it's implementation at Charles Sturt University.
