Dr Simon Sawyer is a registered paramedic, academic, and senior educational leader. Simon is the Associate Head of School (Paramedicine).

Simon’s research primarily focuses on the paramedic response to family violence. His work has played a pivotal role in the introduction of clinical guidelines and training for Australian ambulance services, and legislative reform to include paramedics in key protective frameworks.

Simon has contributed to national paramedicine governance and policy through various board and committee roles, and currently serves as the Victorian Practitioner Member on the Board of Paramedicine with AHPRA.

Simon has extensive experience in higher education teaching, curriculum design, and student support. He has taught across undergraduate and postgraduate paramedicine programs, integrating evidence-based practice, clinical simulation, and interprofessional learning.

Simon has led the development of large scale, blended and online learning models, that enhance student engagement and progression. Simon has been awarded the Vice Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence (Monash University) and been nominated for an Australian Award for University Teaching.

Simon’s PhD examined the paramedic response to family violence, leading to new clinical guidelines, training programs, and legislative recognition of ambulance services in Australia. Simon continues to be a world leading researcher in the paramedic response to family violence.

Simon also has research interests in healthcare education, and paramedic wellbeing.
