Dr Suman is a Lecturer in Population Health and Epidemiology at the School of Agricultural, Environmental and Veterinary Sciences at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga. Dr Suman is a veterinarian who completed a Master’s in Public Health (MPH) with a focus on epidemiology, followed by a PhD in veterinary epidemiology with emphasis on biosecurity, animal disease surveillance and public health from the University of Queensland (UQ), Australia.

Dr. Suman was awarded scholarship from the Bangladesh Scholarship Council and the Nippon Foundation in Japan for his academic excellence in the DVM program. He graduated with Summa Cum Laude Distinction (Gold Medal) for his outstanding academic performance in his MPH. Besides, one of his PhD research papers was awarded the 2020 Best Higher Degree Research Paper by the UQ School of Veterinary Science.

Over the past 20 years, Dr Suman has held significant positions where he has applied his hands-on knowledge and expertise in veterinary epidemiology, biosecurity, animal disease surveillance, public health, and One Health research and education.

Dr Suman’s experience in supervising PhD students (as both Principal and Co-supervisor) and contributing to teaching of veterinary epidemiology, biosecurity and public health, showcasing his ability to impart complex epidemiological concepts in an accessible manner to students.

Dr Suman contributed to developing a web-based simulation tool for FMD outbreaks, an innovative educational resource that leverages technology to enhance learning experiences for UQ undergraduate veterinary students. Dr Suman has also contributed to the development of epidemiological training materials for field veterinarians in the Asia-Pacific region, emphasizing his role in extending education beyond the classroom.

In addition, his contribution to developing and conducting training for biosecurity officers at the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry /CSU Biosecurity Training Centre indicates his capability to deliver high-quality, student-centred learning and teaching. Additionally, Dr Suman possess substantial teaching experience, having served as an Instructor/Lecturer for Agricultural Diploma students.

Dr Suman’s research interests focus on veterinary epidemiology, zoonotic disease, antimicrobial resistance, biosecurity, animal disease surveillance, public health, and One Health.

Dr Suman has extensive experiences in epidemiological studies using advanced epidemiological techniques or modeling (for instance, risk factor modeling, infectious disease spread modeling, Structural Equation Modeling, spatial modeling, Multilevel random effects modeling etc.) with a wide range of sophisticated analytical tools (for example, R, STATA, SaTScan, MLwiN, MPlus, AMOS, ArcGIS Map, Nvivo etc).

Dr Suman has published 40 research papers in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings. Currently, Dr. Suman is actively involved in several research projects focusing on antimicrobial resistance, avian influenza, biosecurity, bluetongue virus, rabies, herpes virus, parvo virus, Newcastle disease, Q Fever, etc. These projects not only aim to advance scientific understanding but also seek to provide direct, actionable solutions that can be implemented by relevant stakeholders and beneficiaries.
