Geoff obtained a science degree before moving onto further study following an interest in animals completing a veterinary degree. After working in a number of veterinary practices, he moved into research. He has an interest in wildlife and followed his passion firstly, with a postgraduate diploma in Conservation Biology and then a PhD on Marine Mammal Reproduction. During his studies he worked within the Anatomy department at the University of Sydney. After completing his PhD, he began lecturing in Veterinary Anatomy. His first position was at Massey University in New Zealand where he was also a member of their wildlife group and oil spill response team. After returning to Australia, he continued lecturing in Veterinary Anatomy at the University of Sydney before taking up a position in lecturing Veterinary Anatomy at Charles Sturt University in 2005.

Since being at CSU he has also followed an interest in animal welfare and was chair of the CSU Animal Care and Ethics Committee (ACEC) for six years while continuing his teaching in Veterinary Anatomy. He has also continued research in wildlife and other areas in this time.

With a teaching philosophy of aiming always to attain excellence in teaching by engaging and motivating the student. The adoption and use of new and innovative teaching methods while maintaining flexibility and the ability to adapt to the student’s present and future needs is essential to maintain quality teaching. It is important to increase the relevance of a course to the student’s future profession by introduction of relevant practical examples. There is always a need to encourage the development of lifelong learning skills. It is also essential to have continued, formative, and summative assessments aligned to the course objectives to optimize the teaching and learning performance.

Using my objectives, I have taught into the Veterinary, Vet Tech, Animal and Equine courses teaching anatomy and trying to bring this interesting topic to the student with relevance and enthusiasm.

My main area of research is wildlife. I am at present within a like-minded group of researchers investigating many aspects of Australian marsupials. We are developing a resource of using Ultrasonography so that clinical veterinarians can use the material as an anatomical and clinical guide. Further research also includes the effects of fire on wildlife and their survival. Also looking into various injuries to wildlife and their long-term survival after care.
