BAgSci(Hons) PhD (Adel)

Professor in Vine Pathology
Wagga Wagga
Building 403 Room 112

Prof Sandra Savocchia joined Charles Sturt University in 2002 as a Lecturer in Vine Pathology in the former School of Wine and Food Sciences. Her research focuses on diseases of plants, including the epidemiology of plant pathogens and their management through conventional and novel methods. This often involves using molecular based approaches for rapid diagnostics, surveillance and to understand the population dynamics of plant pathogens. Her research has been funded by the ARC, Wine Australia, Hort Innovation and industry partners.

Prof Savocchia has supervised Honours and Higher Degree by Research Students and is currently Professor in Vine Pathology. She also holds the position of Sub-Dean, Graduate Studies for the Faculty of Science and Health where she leads the portfolio of Higher Degree by Research Students.

Prof Savocchia has expertise in crop protection, molecular plant pathology and diagnostics with a particular interest in pathogens of viticulture and other horticultural productions systems. She has taught in microbiology, plant pathology and viticultural sciences.

Research interests include fungal plant pathology, epidemiology and management of plant pathogens, genetic diversity of plant pathogens, plant biosecurity and fungicide resistance. Her research team aims to understanding the epidemiology of grapevine and other pathogens, improving their detection using molecular tools and improving management strategies for plant diseases. Of particular interest is the diagnosis and management of dieback diseases of grapevines, walnut, persimmon and other crops.
