BSc (Otago), MSc (Otago), PhD (CSturt) Andrew Hall is an earth scientist with specialist knowledge in climatology and remote sensing, his work reliant on expert application of geographic information science. He is an integral member of environmental science research teams, being a named investigator on grants totalling more than $15m. He is currently senior principal research fellow in CSU’s Water Research Team, conducting geospatial research to maximise ecological benefits from environmental water. Prior to his current role, he was associate and then substantive director of the Institute for Land, Water and Society from 2017 to 2021, leading a research support culture that delivered a three-fold increase in externally funded research expenditure. With a remarkable breadth of experience across Charles Sturt University, answering to a total of fifteen direct supervisors across six organisations, fifteen formal committees and two campuses, he is an accomplished research leader and administrator. Andrew has co-developed eighteen geospatial subjects that are currently delivered by the university and was subject coordinator of eleven subjects in earth and spatial science between 2011 and 2019. He has been a long-time contributor to the ongoing development and maintenance of the Masters of GIS and Remote Sensing course, and part of a three-member academic team that developed the Bachelor of Geospatial Science course. He maintains an active cohort of postgraduate research students who specialise in geospatial applications in environmental and water science research programs. Andrew is recognised internationally for pioneering research in high resolution vegetation remote sensing and plant phenology responses to climate change and variability. He has extensive experience within large externally funded research teams, listed as lead or co-researcher on 30 awarded grants since 2008. As ILWS director, he fostered a culture that encouraged greater academic involvement in research, directing support to focus on acquisition and effective use of external grant funds, simplifying otherwise daunting administrative and compliance barriers to academic participation in research, resulting in 59 successful external grant proposals in its final two years of operation. Andrew had a central role in developing the One Basin CRC, and is a member of the CRC’s leadership team and is the CRC’s academic lead at CSU, bringing research opportunities to Charles Sturt University that align with our strengths in water, environment, socio-economic sciences, and agriculture.Professoriate
