Originally a Massey University veterinary graduate with some time spent in mixed practice, NZ, Petra moved to Australia to complete an internship and residency at Sydney University in Equine Medicine and Surgery. Her interest in equine surgery resulted in membership of the Australia and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists by examination. Having commenced an academic position with Charles Sturt University in 1995, an opportunity for an epidemiological PhD project with the University of Queensland was offered, exploring health and performance in Pony Club horses.

Petra has been lecturing equine science students since 1995 and enjoys teaching in equine disease prevention and introductory epidemiology.

Her research interests are assisting horse owners in managing their horses in a way to reduce disease risk
