Sam is an Associate Professor of Animal Genetics, and the postgraduate (HDR) research coordinator, in the School of Agricultural, Environmental and Veterinary Sciences. Sam graduated with a degree in Veterinary Medicine from India, and later pursued a doctoral degree in Bovine Immunogenomics from the University of Guelph (Ontario, Canada). Sam worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Medical Genetics in University of Alberta (Edmonton, Canada) for over two years; and worked as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Veterinary Clinical and Animal Sciences in University of Copenhagen (Denmark) for another two and a half years before joining Charles Sturt University.

At CSU, Sam teaches undergraduate students enrolled in veterinary and animal sciences, and also trains postgraduate research students. He contributes to the recruitment and progression of Higher Degree by Research students within the school, in addition to different committees inside and outside the university.

Sam has over 15 years of teaching experience that spans multiple universities in Canada, Denmark, and Australia. His teaching expertise is in the discipline areas of animal genetics/genomics, biotechnology, and immunology. Sam believes that both teaching and learning are never ending processes and mistakes are a part of both. He particularly focuses on developing engaging and career relevant learning experiences for his students. He coordinates a subject on Animal Genetics and teaches both Animal Genetics and Animal Biotechnology to undergraduate Animal Science and Veterinary Science students.

Sam’s research interests primarily focus on leveraging both laboratory and computational approaches to answer key questions associated with animal health, production, and welfare. His research spans a broad range of livestock species, and he has published over 50 peer-reviewed journal articles, in addition to several conference presentations and abstracts. He serves on the editorial boards of 4 international journals, and supervises doctoral, master’s and undergraduate honours students at CSU.
